Need a break after the holiday? Then join Park Preserve Educator Nick Martin for an outdoor hiking therapy session! For this session, participants will be hiking a combination of historic carriage roads to reach Echo Rock on this approximate four mile outing. As participants walk along the recently restored Hamilton Point Carriage Road, the deep Palmaghatt Ravine expands at the edge of the trail with every step taken. Our destination, Echo Rock, is a scenic vista which offers expansive, stunning views of the immediate Hudson Valley. If there is abundant snow on the ground at the time of this outing, the destination will change to Mossy Glen Footpath.

Pre-registration is required for participation in all public programs. Please call the Park Office at 845-255-0752. For outings, please wear appropriate clothing and footwear and bring snacks and water. A parent or guardian over the age of 18 must accompany children wishing to participate in any programs. Unless otherwise noted, all programs meet at the Nature Center.

Start off the new year with a hike at Allegany State Park! The hike will take participants into the Wolf Run Area of Allegany State Park near the Carnahan Cemetery and to the intersection of the North Country Trail and back to the parking area.

If there is snow, participants can wear snowshoes, and families with small children are encouraged to bring sleds for them to ride on. A path will be marked out with a snowmobile prior to this event for those not wearing snowshoes. Pets are of course welcome to attend.

A Buffalo Harbor New Year! Celebrate the new year at New York's newest state park! Tour Buffalo's historic waterfront past towering grain elevators, lighthouses, shipping ports and much more! Bring your cross-country skis if there is snow or it will be a walking tour in the event of no snow.

Come start the year off right by joining in a New Year's Day hike on the Catharine Valley Trail!

We will be exploring the winter scenery and resident bird community of Catharine Creek Wildlife Management Area. The walk will begin at 10am at the Catharine Valley Trail kiosk at Watkins High School and continue to Rte. 14 and return.

Children over 5 are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult. Pets are welcome on a 6 foot leash. Please come dressed for cold weather, layers preferred. Refreshments will be provided at the conclusion of the hike.

Registration is not required, but is preferred. To pre-register, call Friends of the Catharine Valley Trail State Park (607) 426-4015. The event is free and open to the public and free parking will be available in the main visitor lot.

First Day Hike: A Winter Walk Through History

Come start the year off right by exploring the winter scenery of historic Fort Ontario. The event will feature a narrated historical stroll around the grounds and buildings of the old 75-acre military reservation. Led by Americorps staffer and historian Mitchell Manniccia, the walk will begin at 10am in the Enlisted Men's Barracks inside the old stone fort.

The mile-long Winter Walk Through History will feature the history and use of brick buildings now owned by the City of Oswego built during Fort Ontario's expansion from company to battalion size in the early 1900s. Walkers wil lalso learn how these brick buildings were used and who occupied them during World War I when the fort served as the largest post hospital in the United States.

The walk will conclude with refreshments in the Enlisted Men's Barracks. Participants are encouraged to wear warm clothes and footwear as the tour will take place outside. Pets are welcome. Please come dressed for cold weather, layers preferred. Refreshments will be provided at the conclusion of the hike.

New Year’s Day Two Views Snowshoe Hike

Start 2015 off on the right foot! Join Nick Martin, Park Educator, for an approximately two mile snowshoe outing in the Peter's Kill Area featuring views of the Rondout Valley and Clove Valley from cliff top ledges. Although the distance is relatively short, there are a few modest hills on this route, which some people may find challenging on snowshoes.

This program is recommended for physically fit adults and children older than 8 years old. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian over the age of 18.

This outing will meet in the Peter's Kill Area. Pre-registration is required & early sign up is suggested as this program may fill to capacity.

Starting at the Sackets Harbor Visitor Center (Corner of Main and Bayard Streets), the route will follow the Battlefield History Trail and a portion of the new Bicentennial Trail around the school and back to the Visitor Center, approximately 2 miles. Be prepared for diverse weather and hiking conditions – snowshoes or cross country skis – trail route includes roadways, sidewalks, and un-groomed stone dust trail.

Recommended for families with young children:
Letchworth CSI - Who Done It: Journey on a wooded loop less than one mile on nearly level terrain near the Trailside Lodge past the site of the new Nature Center, frozen bogs and the Trout Pond.

Recommended for families with older children:
Exotic Trees from Other Lands and State & National Champions: Two mile loop to Inspiration Point, the Glen Iris Fountain, and Middle Falls with more than 200' descent and 200' ascent along trails, roads and stairs.

The hikes are scheduled to begin at 1pm at Trailside Lodge. Participants are encouraged to arrive half an hour early to register. Hot chocolate & cookies will follow at 3pm with certificates and bookmarks.

Schodack Island State Park, in conjunction with the Friends of Schodack Island, will host a wintertime hike along the orange trail on Jan. 1, 2015 at 1pm to welcome the new year. This event is free and open to the public; but reservations are required by calling the Schodack Island Office, (518) 732-0187.

Participants will meet their guide Dan Odell, the president of the Friends of Schodack Island, at the main comfort station near the parking lot at 1pm and then walk (or snowshoe, depending on the conditions) to the ice house chimney and foundation; a round trip of 5 miles. Snowshoe rentals are limited, but are available for a $5 fee if necessary. This approximately 5 mile hike is recommended for ages 5+.

The Miller and Witbeck Ice House can be seen on local area maps from 1891 to 1915. The building once stored thousands of pounds of ice from the frozen Hudson River awaiting transport to New York city where it was then shipped around the world. Today only a small portion of the ice house remains; most dominant is the chimney from the powerhouse where a steam engine provided power to run a conveyer belt from the water's edge into the storage area.

Hot cocoa and cookies will be served at the completion of the hike, compliments of the Friends of Schodack Island.

Seal Walk

Jones Beach State Park will be offering a series of walks to see wintering seals January through March. A State Park naturalist will lead visitors on an hour and a half leisurely beach walk to an area where up to four species of seals can be observed. Along the way, there will be opportunities to see many winter birds and to explore marine geology. Please dress appropriately and wear comfortable footwear for hiking. Binoculars are recommended. Meet at the Theodore Roosevelt Nature Center at West End Field #1.

Reservations are required and will be accepted beginning two weeks prior to each date. Space is limited. Fee: $4.00 per person, children under 3 are free (unless otherwise noted). If you are unable to keep your reservation, please call and cancel so that others may have the opportunity to attend. Latecomers will forfeit their reservation. Start off the New Year by making a healthy resolution you will love to keep: a breath-taking hike at Taughannock Falls. Join the Finger Lakes Educator for a hike down the Gorge Trail, up to the Overlook, across to the multi-use trail and back to the parking lot. Hot drinks and light snacks will be available before and after the hike! Plean on being outside for at least 2 hours (more if you hike all 5 miles), so dress for the weather and wear appropriate footwear. If there is enough snow, feel free to bring your snowshoes or cross country skis.

Start off the new year with a hike over the longest, elevated pedestrian bridge in the world!

Walkers, cyclists, runners and skaters are invited to meet at either the west or east entrance gates to the Walkway at 2pm. Children are more than welcome, and participants can choose the distance of a 1.25 or 2.5 mile walk, ride, skate or run.

All participants will be entered in a raffle to win 2 tickets to Walkway's 4th of July Firework Celebration 2015, Walkway Membership, and Walkway apparel. The raffle will be held at the center of the Walkway at 2:30pm when both groups (west side and east side) meet at the center of the Walkway.

Join Laura Conner on this two mile long hike to the best scenic vistas of the Clove Valley and the Rondout Valley in the Peter's Kill Area of Minnwaska. Meet at the Peter's Kill Park Office.

This program is recommended for physically fit adults and children older than eight years old, accompanied by a parent or guardian over the age of 18. Snowshoes may be rented at the Park Office at $15 per adult and $14 per junior, per day. Early arrival is suggested for snowshoe rental.
