Planning Meeting Date Set for Niagara Gorge Projects Involving NY Power Authority and State Parks

The New York Power Authority (NYPA) and New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) will host a meeting for a working presentation of Niagara Gorge projects on February 4, 2010 at 7pm in the Community Room of the Power Vista, the NYPA visitors center in Lewiston. The public is welcome to attend.

Topics to be discussed include concepts for site upgrades at the Niagara Gorge Discovery Center and a new access trail along the Niagara Gorge Trails to connect two new scenic overlooks. The proposed locations for the new scenic overlooks are in the parking area near the corner of Ontario and Whirlpool Streets in Niagara Falls with the other on the Great Gorge Railway Trail near the Whirlpool Bridges.

The planned work is a cooperative effort between NYPA and OPRHP, and comes as a result of one of several settlement agreements related to the new license NYPA received in 2007 for the operation of the Niagara Power Project. The proposed projects are within the licensed boundary of the Niagara project. The Niagara Gorge Discovery Center and Great Gorge Railway Trail are owned, operated and maintained by OPRHP.

These projects are in addition to, but not related to, the Greenway projects being undertaken by NYPA and OPRHP which are part of another settlement agreement for the new license.
