This mahogany veneer dressing table with marble insert is probably French and is said to have been a gift from Chancellor Robert R. Livingston to his cousin Harriet Livingston upon her marriage to Robert Fulton. Robert R. Livingston Jr. met Robert Fulton while serving as Minister to France under Thomas Jefferson. Both men were interested in scientific pursuits, and their relationship most likely resulted in Livingston?s introduction of his cousin to Fulton.
