This balloon-shaped clock was made to commemorate the first hydrogen gas balloon flight in December 1783 over Paris by physicists Jacques Charles and Nicolas Robert. Only one other balloon clock similar to the one at Clermont State Historic Site exists; it is in the collection of the Musee de l?Air et de l?Espace in Paris.
