Egbert Benson painted by Gilbert Stuart 1794-95. Egbert Benson was a good friend of John Jay's. They worked together on the first New York State Constitution, which was adopted in 1777. Benson later became the state's first attorney general. Jay commissioned Gilbert Stuart, best known for his iconic portrait of George Washington, to paint this portrait of Benson. It is the only original portrait painted by Stuart that remains at the John Jay Homestead State Historic Site; Stuart's large portrait of John Jay once hung here but now hangs in the Diplomatic Reception Rooms at the State Department in Washington, D.C.
