Medal 1828 or 1829. In 1828, John Jay's son William anonymously entered a competition sponsored by the Anti-Dueling Association of Savannah, Georgia. William won the contest for producing the best essay arguing against the practice of dueling, which was then legal. His essay was published in 1830, and he was awarded this medal, whose design includes oak leaves, symbolic of strength, and laurel leaves, symbolic of peace. The carved figure with the lyre symbolizes eloquence.
