The Clay Pit Ponds State Park Preserve is located within a 250 acre natural area near the southwest shore of Staten Island which was once the site of a clay mining operation. Today the Park supports a variety of habitats such as wetlands, fields, sandy barrens, spring-fed streams, and woodlands. The area is rich in plant and animal life. The Clay Pit Ponds Park Preserve Interpretive Center located within the Park is a great example of a public-private partnership involving the Natural Heritage Trust. The new Interpretive Center houses three classrooms and exhibit space. It provides the Preserve with the space needed to display the area's natural environment and man made history while hosting interpretive programming.
