The bayonet was able to produce horrific wounds at close range, and made the treatment of wounds by 18th century medical techniques very difficult. Ironically it was more effective as a psychological weapon, as the sight of long lines of soldiers; advancing at a brisk, yet orderly pace, could instill fear in an enemy that had been weakened by constant musket fire.
