Frederic Edwin Church, Southwest Façade, Main House, Olana, c. 1870. In 1870 Church worked with the architect Calvert Vaux (1824-1895) to design a new house as the crowning feature in the landscape. Hundreds of pencil drawings and watercolors in Olana's collection document Church's ideas for the building, and its myriad decorative details, which were largely inspired by the artist's recent trip to the Middle East. Penciled doodles and measurements in the margins reveal Church constantly refining his vision for the building.
