View of Niagara, ca. 1842, by John Vanderlyn. A native of Kingston, New York, Vanderlyn was an accomplished American painter trained in France. He is said to be the first American to paint Niagara Falls, which was later painted by many American artists in the Hudson River School. Vanderlyn's first paintings of Niagara were completed by 1804 after a trip to the falls in 1801. His landscape paintings were meant to appeal to the wide public and to support him financially through the sale of reproduction engravings. Senate House has a number of Vanderlyn's paintings in its collections and also works by some of his relatives.
