Morgan Lewis after Trumbull- Morgan Lewis (1754-1844) had an illustrious military career as chief of staff to General Horatio Gates and as Quartermaster General in the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. He then served in the New York State Assembly and Senate, as State Attorney General, as Chief Justice of the State Supreme Court, and as the third governor of New York from 1804 to 1807. Lewis was the great-grandfather of Ruth Livingston Mills and built the first house on the Staatsburgh property sometime before 1797. After a fire in 1832, Lewis rebuilt the core of the current house, which was later renovated by Stanford White under Lewis's great-granddaughter's stewardship. This painting is probably after the portrait of Morgan Lewis by Jonathan Trumbull in the collection at New York's City Hall.
