Cleopatra Tapestry. This tapestry hangs in the main hall of Staatsburgh. Visitors can see it as they climb the wide staircase to the second floor. The tapestry dates from the mid-17th century and was probably made in Brussels in the workshop of Jan Raes. It is believed to depict a scene of Cleopatra's Banquet. In the late 19th century, wealthy Americans were modeling themselves after British aristocracy; tapestries that adorned the halls of stately homes and palaces in Europe were seen as important decorative additions to American country homes. The tapestries at Staatsburgh were probably procured by the Millses' design firm Allard et Fils or their architect Stanford White.
