Albert Bierstadt, Sierra Nevada, 1871- This painting of a Native American camp in the Rocky Mountains was acquired in 1911 by the Millses at an auction of items owned by Ogden Mills's uncle, Herbert R. Bishop. The 1938 inventory of the Millses' Hudson River mansion indicates that this painting was originally displayed in the Billiard Room. The Mills family, perhaps drawn to the artist's western themes because of their own California roots, owned other paintings by Albert Bierstadt that are not in the collection at Staatsburgh State Historic Site.
