Greek Vase- This Greek black figure vase attributed to Boeotia is called a Scyphus or skyphos. Used for drinking wine, it dates to c. 480 B.C. Ogden Mills purchased it in 1909 at auction with four other vases that are now located in the drawing room at Staatsburgh. The vase is decorated with the design of a fox stalking a rabbit on one side and a fox stalking a bird on the other. Collecting antiquities from Greece, Rome, and Egypt was very popular in the 19th and early 20th centuries, fueled by massive archaeological digs in these areas. The Mills family donated many antiquities to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
