Guided Moonlight Snowshoe Hike

Explore our winter woods by the light of the full moon! Look and listen for signs of wildlife as we walk, along our trails guided by moonlight. If weather permits, this program will be offered on snowshoes. Registration is required. Please call for additional information or to preregister. We encourage you to try walking by moonlight alone, but you can bring a flashlight with a red light (or with the light covered with red cellophane) if desired. Please do not use white lights as it interferes with the development of night vision.

Snowshoes may be rented from the Nature Center for $3/pair

Join us for a guided snowshoe hike under the bright full moon. Experience the park when it is at its most peaceful, a special treat few have the chance to enjoy!

Bring your own or call Park Office to reserve snowshoes.

Dress warmly, the temperature drops quickly when it gets dark. Bring a small flashlight, but keep it in your pocket. We want to take advantage of the bright moonlight!

Meet at the parking lot, just past the park office.

If there is less than 6 inches of snow, this will be a hike instead.

Join a naturalist on a two-mile guided snowshoe hike through some of the most picturesque areas of the park. No registration necessary. This is a free event. Please use the southern Route 50 entrance to enter the park. Take your second left onto Geyser Loop Road to reach the classroom.

Join the Environmental Educator for a fun snowshoe lesson and short hike to look for signs of wildlife in the park. Patrons are invited to warm up next to the fire with a mug of hot cocoa after the hike. Fee is $3 per person or $5 per family. Space is limited for this event and registration is required. Participants will go out in search of the items on their bingo sheet while also learning more about the winter world around them. This program is designed for children ages 5 to 12. Loop around the Lake for Families at Sam’s Point

Join us for this three-mile loop on snowshoes to view magnificent Lake Maratanza. Winds blow almost continuously across this sky lake, causing large snow drifts that can reach incredible heights! On our way back toward the Visitor Center, we will stop at the Sam's Point Overlook where on a clear day there is a great view of the Wallkill Valley, the Catskills and much more. Snowshoes may be rented for this program for a fee of $5 per person. If there is insufficient snow cover, this program will be offered as a hike. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian over the age of 18. Meet at the Sam's Point Visitor Center. Pre-registration is required by calling Sam's Point at 845-647-7989.

Snowshoe Outing to Awosting Falls

Join Stefan Ramirez, Student Conservation/Americorps intern, for a two-and-half-mile snowshoe hike to Awosting Falls. Starting from the Peter's Kill Area, participants will hike briefly on the Awosting Falls Connector Footpath and then journey up the scenic Awosting Falls Carriage Road, which has a gentle incline as it approaches Awosting Falls. If weather conditions are cold enough, a frozen volcano-like structure forms at the base of the waterfall and changes with every added drop of water. A limited number of snowshoes are available for participants to borrow for this program from the education department, located at the Peter's Kill Area. Otherwise, snowshoes may be rented from the Park Preserve Office, located at the Peter's Kill Area, for $5 per person for this program. Early arrival is suggested if you would like to borrow snowshoes. If there is insufficient snow cover, this program will be offered as a hike. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian over the age of 18. Meet in the Peter's Kill Area. Pre-registration is required.

Break out your warm clothing and snowshoes and join a park educator, for a one-mile long snowshoe walk in the Peter's Kill Area of Minnewaska. We'll walk along the Red Loop Footpath, which meanders through a grassy area and a wetland before entering a mixed deciduous forest, where it descends to the picturesque Peter's Kill stream. Along the way, we'll look for signs of wildlife on the trail including tracks, browse and scat. This outing does include one steep hill that some people may find challenging to climb. A limited number of snowshoes are available for participants to borrow for this program from the education department, located at the Peter's Kill Area. Otherwise, snowshoes may be rented from the Park Preserve Office, located at the Peter's Kill Area, for $5 per person for this program. Early arrival is suggested if you would like to borrow snowshoes. If there is insufficient snow cover, this program will be offered as a hike. Meet in the Peter's Kill Area. Not a morning person? Then, join a park educator for this two-mile-long, afternoon snowshoe outing in the Peter's Kill Area of Minnewaska. Our route, which does include a few modestly challenging hills, will feature views of the Rondout Valley and Clove Valley from cliff top ledges. This program is recommended for physically fit adults and children older than eight years old. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian over the age of 18. A limited number of snowshoes are available for participants to borrow for this program from the education department, located at the Peter's Kill Area. Otherwise, snowshoes may be rented from the Park Preserve Office, located at the Peter's Kill Area, for $5 per person for this program.
