SPECTACLE: Frederic Church and the Business of Art
Sunday, November 19, 2023 until Sunday, March 31, 2024
Olana State Historic Site
Frederic Church's The Heart of the Andes was the pinnacle of his critical and popular success as America's preeminent landscape artist and now holds center court at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art's American Wing. Spectacle: Frederic Church and the Business of Art combines immersive video technology with the wealth of Olana State Historic Site's archival holdings to demonstrate how Church's art responded to the most advanced scientific thought of his day and reached a broad public audience, the largest of any 19th-century American artist. In doing so, this special exhibition responds to two of Olana's most frequently asked questions: how did people experience Frederic Church's major paintings and how did an artist make enough money to create Olana? Re-Presenting Landscape: the Paintings of Lydia Rubio
Sunday, March 31, 2024 06:00 PM - 07:00 PM
Olana State Historic Site
How can landscape painting serve as a source of refuge and self-reflection in today's challenging world? During this virtual webinar, Cuban artist Lydia Rubio will discuss how her work reinterprets the notion of "landscape," taking inspiration from Frederic Church and members of the "Hudson River School". Much like Church himself, Rubio's paintings take inspiration from her travels as well as the landscape and ecology of the Hudson River and are deeply informed by her interest in philosophy, geometry, and Latin American culture. Following a brief presentation of Rubio's work, Cuban-American writer, poet, and scholar Enrico Santí, will lead a moderated dialogue with the artist.
