Learn to Kayak at Thompson’s Lake

Join us for a beginner’s kayak course at Thompson’s Lake! Learn the basics of kayaking with emphasis on effective paddling strokes and safe practices. This introductory course is ideal for first time and beginner kayakers. Sturdy shoes/sandals are preferred. Program is appropriate for adults and children age 12 years and older. Space is very limited, preregister by calling 518-872-0800. Parking fee is $7, kayaks are provided for participants.

Autumn is a wonderful time of year to go outside and enjoy the gorgeous days and fall color. It’s also a great time of year to explore our local shrubs and learn who’s who and what’s what. We’ll identify some beneficial native shrubs, figure out which invasive plants to remove from our yards, and how to benefit birds and other wildlife. We’ll also keep our eyes open for migrating bird species. Dress for the outdoors and bring binoculars and/or a notebook. Call 518-872-0800 to register.

With fall in full swing, the deciduous trees on the escarpment and in the valley begin to prep for the coming winter. The weeks leading to bare trees treat us with a beautiful array of colors. Join us as we learn the different trees and why they behave the way they do. Meet at the Pear Orchard parking lot. Pre-register for this program by calling the park office at 518-872-1237. Fall Foliage Hike at Thacher Park

Take in the scenic beauty and seasonal color of the park on this early autumn walk. We’ll walk the Fred Schroeder Memorial Trail, a three-mile loop trail in the north zone of the park. At the halfway mark, we’ll stop to take in the view from High Point, on the escarpment. Dress for a cool mountain morning and bring a snack and water. Meet at Carrick Road parking area. Leave No Trace Awareness Workshop at Thacher Park

Join us at the Carrick Road Parking lot and join us for our adventure through the northern area of the park. Leave No Trace is a guideline to enjoying the outdoors with as little impact as possible. This free workshop will run until roughly 2pm, so be sure to bring a packed lunch and be comfortable hiking between 3-5 miles. Guided Walk on the Indian Ladder Trail at Thacher Park

Descend the cliff and learn about the geologic and cultural history of the Helderbergs on this scenic and historic trail. See underground streams, look for fossils, and step inside the crevice cave along the trail. Wear sturdy shoes and meet at the Indian Ladder picnic area. Walk lasts about 1.5 hours. Geology of the Blue Trail at Thacher Park

The blue trail in the southern portion of the park is a hidden gem and doesn’t necessarily get explored too often. Along this trail, you’ll pass a series of cliffs and some fields full of grikes. Wear appropriate footwear for walking on and off trail to view the geology. Meet at the Paint Mine parking lot. Pre-register for this program by calling the park office at 518-872-1237.
