Come join us at Sam's Point to celebrate National Public Lands Day. We will be pulling invasive plants from along the sides of our trails. Removal of these species is a very important step in protecting the globally rare ecosystem found here. All necessary training and tools will be provided. Bring enough water to last the day (at least 2 liters), snacks, and a lunch. After the work day is over, please feel free to continue to celebrate National Public Lands Day by hiking our wonderful trails. All National Public Lands Day volunteers will receive a free day pass to participating federal public lands, including most National Parks. This volunteer opportunity is appropriate for adults and children who are at least eight years old, accompanied by a parent or guardian over the age of 18. Meet at the Sam's Point Visitor Center. Month of October: Landscape Paintings of New York, solo exhibit by Mitchell Saler at Sam’s Point

Mitchell Saler is having a solo exhibit, Landscape Paintings of New York, at the Sam’s Point Visitor Center as the prize for winning First Place in the Plein Air Paint Out held at Sam’s Point. The show presents around 20 of his realistic oil paintings depicting scenes of nature in the state of New York. The landscapes are on view and for sale during the month of October. A portion of the proceeds from painting sales will go to help support Sam’s Point. A reception will be held Saturday, October 6 from 3 – 5 pm, where you can meet the artist and enjoy refreshments. In his paintings, he emphasizes vastness, dramatic lighting and atmospheric effects. He is inspired by the sublime Hudson River School landscapes. Mitchell Saler states, “I enjoy the beauty and variety of landscapes in New York and how they change with the seasons. Through painting and drawing, I experience meditative relaxation as well as exhilarating energy, and in my works, I balance tranquility with a majestic drama.” He is a board member of the Goshen Art League and the Wallkill River School, and also a member of the Orange County Arts Council, the Middletown Art Group and the Lower Hudson Valley Plein Air Painters. Environmental Art for Kids at Sam’s Point

Come channel your inner artist! Using inspiration from environmental artists such as Andy Goldsworthy, participants will create temporary sculptures using natural materials found in the park. The program will take place near the Sam's Point Visitor Center, but will include a short hike to gather materials. This program is recommended for children eight years old and above, but everyone is welcome to join us. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian over the age of 18. 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m What exactly is an “ice cave” and how did they form? To find out, join Laura Davis, Interpretive Ranger, for this adventurous hike to the ice caves. We’ll take the scenic route to return, enjoying views of Lake Maratanza. This hike includes approximately three and a half miles of hiking on old woods roads and a half mile of hiking on the ice caves footpath, which includes steep stone stairs, ladders, boardwalks and slippery surfaces. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian over the age of 18. Meet at the Sam’s Point Visitor Center. Pre-registration is required by calling Sam's Point at 845-647-7989.

Have you ever been so close to a hawk that you could see how sharp its talons are? Have you ever been so close to an owl that you could see what color eyes it has? Now is your chance! Join Annie Mardiney, wildlife rehabilitator for Wild Mountain Birds, and Laura Davis, Sam's Point Interpretive Ranger, to see and learn about these fascinating raptors. Stop by the picnic area near the Visitor Center to see a variety of live education birds. If there is inclement weather this program will be moved to October 20th. All children must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian over the age of 18. Pre-registration is NOT required.

Citizen Science Plant Hike at Sam’s Point

When do the flowers bloom? When do the leaves fall? We are very curious to find out! In this program, you will learn all about phenology, the study of how plants and animals change throughout the seasons, while working as a citizen scientist to collect information about the plants in our park. We will be offering this hike once a month at Sam's Point to monitor seasonal changes in plants along the Loop Road. Along this carriage road, you will encounter a variety of flowers, ferns, shrubs and trees which change as you move up in elevation. This program is recommended for children eight years old and above, but everyone is welcome to join us. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian over the age of 18. Why do hawks have curved beaks? Why do herons have such long legs? Come learn about the amazing world of bird diversity, including hands on demonstrations of different bird adaptations. After the lesson, participants can mix and match beaks, wings, legs, and more to design and draw a bird of their very own! The possibilities are endless.
