SPECTACLE: Frederic Church and the Business of Art
Sunday, November 19, 2023 until Sunday, March 31, 2024
Olana State Historic Site
Frederic Church's The Heart of the Andes was the pinnacle of his critical and popular success as America's preeminent landscape artist and now holds center court at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art's American Wing. Spectacle: Frederic Church and the Business of Art combines immersive video technology with the wealth of Olana State Historic Site's archival holdings to demonstrate how Church's art responded to the most advanced scientific thought of his day and reached a broad public audience, the largest of any 19th-century American artist. In doing so, this special exhibition responds to two of Olana's most frequently asked questions: how did people experience Frederic Church's major paintings and how did an artist make enough money to create Olana? Raven Steals the Sun: Native American Eclipse Stories
Wednesday, April 3, 2024 05:30 PM - 07:00 PM
Niagara Falls State Park
Perry Ground is a Turtle
Clan member of the Onondaga Nation of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy and a
Master Storyteller. This Story-filled presentation will share the beliefs,
traditions, and protocols of several Native American tribes related to the Sun
and Eclipse events. Tribes across North America view these solar events in many
different ways – as a signal or a transformation, as omens, as sacred, and as a
celebration. From the Cherokee to the Navajo to the Inuit to the
Haudenosaunee (and many other tribes), these traditional legends have been told
for hundreds of years and continue to be important to Native American culture
today. A brief understanding of each tribe's location and environment will be
shared in addition to the stories. Storyteller Perry Ground
will bring the stories to life through vivid descriptions, his rhythmic voice
and a VERY active stage presence. These stories become ‘interactive' as
Perry is known to include audience members in the stories. Not just for
children, all listeners (young and old), will find this presentation
captivating, highly entertaining yet very educational. Registration
required on

Sugaring Off, 18th Century Style at the Senate House State Historic Site
Saturday, April 6, 2024 11:00 AM - 04:00 PM
Minnewaska State Park Preserve
Collecting maple sap and boiling it
down to sugar has been a long-standing tradition in North America. Indigenous
Peoples in the northeast first collected the sap, boiled it into sugar, and
used it in their cooking. When European colonists arrived, they learned how to
process the sap from Indigenous Peoples. It was used as a sweetener, in place
of expensive cane sugar, in a variety of foods including oatmeal, sausage, and
baked goods. Join the staff of Senate House State
Historic Site to celebrate the maple season for its annual Sugaring Off event.
Activities include boiling maple sap into syrup, maple crafts, meat smoking,
and hearthside cooking. Local militia units will also be on-site demonstrating
camp-life during the 1700s. Mark
Rust will be providing musical entertainment, including a variety of musical
instruments such as the banjo, violin, guitar, and spoons. This is a free,
family-friendly event! Nick Martin, Park Preserve Educator,
