Tuesday Trek: High Peter’s Kill and Awosting Falls Loop Snowshoe Outing at Minnewaska

Tuesday, February 27, 2018 10:00 AM - 03:30 PM

Come join a park educator for an adventurous five-mile snowshoe hike along the High Peter's Kill Footpath and the Awosting Falls Carriage Road. Starting from the Awosting Parking Area, participants will hike along the High Peter's Kill Footpath, a narrow trail that slowly descends to the edge of the Peter's Kill stream. Interesting icicle formations abound along the edges of the stream. From here, we'll continue along the Yellow Connector Footpath to reach the Red Loop Footpath, which we'll follow up through the woods for a rest at the Park Preserve Office. The return trip will take participants on the easy-going Awosting Falls Carriage Road, past the 65-foot tall Awosting Falls, where a volcano-shaped ice cone forms if conditions are right. The first half of this route includes numerous hills, rocky spots and potentially icy areas. This is a rigorous outing and participants must wear appropriate winter gear and bring plenty of food and water for the day. A limited number of snowshoes are available for participants to borrow for this program from the education department, located at the Peter's Kill Area. Otherwise, snowshoes may be rented from the Park Preserve Office, located at the Peter's Kill Area, for $5 per person for this program. Early arrival is suggested for snowshoe rental. If there is insufficient snow cover, this program will be offered as a hike. Meet in the Awosting Parking Area. Pre-registration is required by calling Minnewaska 845-255-0752.
