Gilgo State Park closed effective November 18th, 2024

Effective Monday, November 18, 2024, Gilgo State Park, a 4-wheel drive access-only park, will close for sand replenishment. The park will remain closed while the United States Army Corps of Engineers, NY District, places 1.25 million cubic yards of sand from the Fire Island Inlet onto the shoreline of Gilgo State Park, within the Town of Babylon.

Gilgo State Park is located on a barrier beach on the south shore of Long Island, with Atlantic Ocean and Great South Bay frontage. Access to the park is via 4 wheel drive only and requires a permit. The park is a carry in/ carry out facility. Spectacular views and tranquility make this a popular destination. The park is undeveloped. Anglers enjoy surf fishing in the Atlantic Ocean. Fishing is abundant in the fall during the striped bass migration. Anglers may also catch blue fish and a variety of salt-water species. The park is also actively managed for the protection of the piping plover and sea beach amaranth. Stewards monitor the natural resources and provide education to visitors regarding habitat management. Swimming not permitted.

    No facilities available.
    Carry in/carry out.

    Access to park is via 4 wheel drive vehicles only.
    All entering must possess valid NYS Parks Beach Vehicle Access Permit.
  • Subject to closure without notice for erosion and/ or endangered species management.
  • Fishing: 4/1 - 12/31: Open 24 hours a day. Must possess valid NYS Sport Fishing Permit to enter.
  • Open 24 hours per day with a valid New York State Sport Fishing Permit.
Must See! These aren't your typical night owls. Don't miss seeing Short-eared owls hunt during the day!
