Ask a Naturalist!

Q: Why can't I feed the geese?

A: Feeding geese can lead to many problems. While they may be enjoyable to watch, feeding them will result in too many geese in the park. Their droppings on the sites can be a serious health hazard. Also, the lack of nutrition from the food that people give them may result in a condition known as angel wings, in which the feathers curl and the bird is unable to fly.

DID YOU KNOW?

History:

  • Roberto Clemente State Park, located in the Bronx alongside the Harlem River, was the first Urban New York State Park.
  • Part of the park was built on the original Tremont Bridge, which was important to the industrialization and growth of the University Heights Community. In addition, land on the north end of the park was donated by New York University.

Located just north of Yankee Stadium, Roberto Clemente State Park is the original state park in New York City. The park opened in 1973 as the Harlem River State Park and was renamed after Clemente, the first Latino- American inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, in 1974. The 25-acre waterfront park was constructed by NYS Urban Development Corporation along with the 1,700-unit River Park Towers and a public school according to a master plan envisioning a 65-acre self-contained community on former industrial land sandwiched between a narrow stretch of the Harlem River and a thick infrastructure bundle that includes Metro North Railroad tracks and the Major Deegan Expressway. Roberto Clemente State Park serves as the outdoor recreation facility and indoor gym for several nearby schools and the community alike. The park's aquatics complex offers swimming for all ages and one of the last remaining dive tanks in all of New York City.
