This green silk parasol is probably French and belonged to Alice Delafield Clarkson Livingston (1872?1964), the wife of John Henry Livingston (1848?1927) and mother of Janet (1910?1972) and Honoria (1909?2000). Alice was coming of age in the 1880s and 1890s when parasols were a common fashion accessory. The parasol helped women of leisure maintain a fashionable pale complexion. This parasol?s ornately carved ivory handle culminates with a bear attacking its prey.
