This 1793 portrait by Gilbert Stuart features a mature Margaret Beekman Livingston (1724?1800). Margaret Beekman married her distant cousin, Robert R. Livingston (1688?1775), in 1742. She was the mother of Chancellor Robert R. Livingston and ten other children. After her husband?s death in 1775, she managed Clermont during her son Robert R. Livingston Jr.?s long absences and seemed to be a steadying force for the family. She is remembered for rescuing many family pieces from Clermont before it was burned by the British in 1777 and for rebuilding the home after the devastation.
