German Map of the Hudson River Valley, circa October 1777 - This fanciful depiction of the lower Hudson River Valley was drawn by a German mapmaker who obviously had never visited the region. The artist has located Fort Montgomery on an island in the middle of the river and neighboring Fort Clinton near current-day Kingston, NY. The map and accompanying text describe various aspects of the October 1777 raid conducted by British, Loyalist, and Hessian forces under Sir Henry Clinton.
