M. 1763 Charleville Upper Barrel Band - Archival sources as well as this artifact show that French muskets were issued to American troops at Fort Montgomery in time for the October 6, 1777, battle. These muskets were probably part of the secret arms shipments that arrived in Portsmouth, NH, the previous spring, nearly a year before the Treaty of Alliance between France and America, which formalized the French providing supplies to the United States.
