Invitations to Supper & Dinner, Sarah Livingston Jay 1787-1788. John Jay was U.S. Secretary for Foreign Affairs in the late 1780s, when New York City was the capital of the United States. The Jays hosted many dinner parties for diplomats, members of the Constitutional Convention, friends, and family. This booklet, which was kept by Sarah Jay, records the Jay's parties and invitees and is considered one of the most significant American social documents of the 18th century.
