By the time of the New Windsor Cantonment, the Continental Army had the experience necessary to survive the harsh winter conditions of the Hudson Valley. When the army arrived in late October, 1782, the building of huts to shelter the nearly 8,000 officers, soldiers, women and children that made up Washington's army was of prime concern.
