Frederic Edwin Church's El Khasne, Petra As part of an 18-month sojourn to Europe and the Middle East, Church undertook an expedition to Petra, Jordon, which he memorialized in the 1874 El Khasné, Petra, the only finished studio painting Church kept for himself and his family. Church designed the frame himself and designed the painted orientalist decorative schemes of the sitting room at Olana to complement the work's impressive placement over the mantel. In a departure from his sweeping panoramic landscapes, Church used the rock siq to focus and frame the distinctive bright pinky orange facade of the Khasné. Early exhibition records list the work as belonging to Church's wife Isabel, whose portrait by George Baker is also seen in this image.
