Arthur Parton (1842?1914), Looking Southwest over Church's Farm from the Sienghenbergh, 1864. Church commissioned this work from local Hudson artist Arthur Parton, who painted the view from one of the higher points on the property?near the location where Church planned to build his new studio. This oil on canvas work documents the hardscrabble appearance of the farm landscape, which was the first parcel Church purchased, before the artist set about planting tens of thousands of trees, opening views, building carriage roads, adding additional parcels of land, and establishing parkland to create the 250-acre artist designed landscape he would name Olana.
