Frederic Edwin Church, The Hudson Valley in Winter, from Olana, c. 1866?72. Recognizable as the quintessential view from Olana, this sketch depicts the prospect from the location of Frederic Church's 1864 studio. Built on the highest point of ground owned by the artist at that time, the spot offers a spectacular vista southwest, and in the distance, the widening of the Hudson River. In the 1970s, this painting helped prevent a nuclear power plant from being built directly in Olana's viewshed, serving as evidence in hearings associated with this threat.
