John A. Eberle, South Road, Olana, 1906. "I have made about 1 ¾ miles of road this season, opening entirely new and beautiful views. I can make more and better landscapes in this way than by tampering with canvas and paint in the studio," wrote Frederic Church in 1884 to his friend, Albany sculptor Erastus Dow Palmer. This lovely historic photograph captures one of the more than five miles of carriage roads Church built throughout Olana. These roads are still accessible to the public, and allow for visitors to move through and experience Olana's designed landscape features against a backdrop of sublime and far-reaching views.
