This land deed, dated June 5, 1652, documents the sale of land in "the Esopus" to Thomas Chambers from Kawachhikan and Sowappekat, representatives of the local Native Americans. The document confirms that the sellers received payment for the land and could no longer lay claim to it. The deed proved invaluable in 1669 when Anckrup, a Native American, complained that Chambers had not paid him in full. However, upon investigation, it was found that Anckrup had been called Kawachhikan in the deed and had indeed been paid in full.
