This kas was a gift to Senate House State Historic Site in 1954 from the Tillson family and was part of the dowry of Ester Freer, who married Job Tillson in 1795. Kasten are a form of case furniture, much like a wardrobe, used for storing linens or clothing. Originally developed in the Netherlands, kasten were also found in Germany and in the American colonies by Dutch and German immigrants. This kas was selected to furnish Senate House because the Ten Broecks, the family who built the house and whose decents owned the house during the revolution, were Dutch and would have probably owned a kas.
