This doll's kitchen probably dates from the 18th century and is known as a "Dutch" kitchen or "Nuremberg" kitchen. These model rooms probably originated from cottage industries in Germany and are called Puppenkueche, which means "doll kitchen." This kitchen may have been made in the Albany, New York, area in the German style. Furnishing elaborate 18th-century dollhouses often became the hobby of wealthy ladies who took an interest in interior decorating. A model room like this one, however, more often served as an educational tool for little girls. Though a toy, the realism of the kitchen and its contents introduced little girls to the world of homemaking.
