The Tower of Victory was built in 1888 following the centennial celebrations of the War for Independence. John H. Duncan, the architect that designed Grant's Tomb in New York City, developed the plans for the monument, and sculptor William O'Donovan created the bronze statues that were added to the tower a few years later. Damaged by hurricane force winds in 1950, the tower's roof and other architectural features were removed. Since then, the tower has suffered ill effects of exposure to the elements. After extensive study, engineers and preservation specialists have concluded that the best way of preventing further damage to the tower is to reinstall its historic roof. This plan has been prepared and is waiting funding.
