This portrait of George Washington was painted by Asher B. Durand (1796?1886). It was copied from an unfinished portrait ca.1795 by Gilbert Stuart in the Boston Athenaeum, Boston, Massachusetts. Durand's copies of Gilbert Stuart's George and Martha Washington have been focal points of the museum at Washington's Headquarters since their donation to the collection prior to 1882.
