Cabin Fever

Grafton Lakes State Park
Grafton Lakes State Park and the Friends of Grafton Lakes State Park will host a Cabin Fever event on Saturday, January 22, 2022. Due to COVID-19, many of the indoor exhibits will be offering hikes and outdoor demos throughout the day. The event will include a polar plunge, food vendors, and family-friendly recreational activities. The event is free of charge and runs from 11:30 AM-3:00 PM.

Cabin Fever will include activities such as its popular snow bowling hill, snowshoe outings and a snowball toss, as well as sled dogs. Other outdoor offerings this year include free snowmobile rides, sensory walks, and an ice dive demonstration. Registration for the hikes will open on January 2nd via phone. Check our website and Facebook for updated information. The Polar Plunge kicks off the main events at 11:30AM (registration from 11-11:30am). 

As always, the Plunge includes a playful prize for the silliest costume offered by the Friends of Grafton Lakes State Park, so start planning your January beach attire! Snowshoe Hike

Join the Taconic Hiking Club on a snowshoe around Shaver Pond. We will include a side trip on the Granville Hicks trail to see the West Family cemetery, dating from the early 1800's and the Granville Hick's Cemetery and return on the Hick's Beltway. Distance almost 2.5 miles. We will either need snowshoes or traction devices such as micro-spikes. Bring both, we will decide which we need for the conditions that day. Dress in layers. The planned route may be changed due to conditions that day.

Every year the Cornell Lab of Ornithology along with the National Audubon Society encourages bird counts at this time to tally wintering bird populations. Scientists use this data to help understand where populations of birds are in winter, etc. It is a very successful citizen science project so all birds seen here that day are recorded into databases. 3 mile walk.

On Sunday at 10 am, January 23, a three or four mile ski hike for the advanced skier will meet at Trailside Lodge. Skiers will be following a variety of sections of the 15-mile ski trail system that is bounded by Pine Pond, Castile Entrance, Cabin Area B and Inspiration Point with views of the Great Bend Gorge and Portage Canyon. If adequate ski conditions do not exist, a two-mile nature hike will replace the ski hike.

Adventure Nature Ski Hike

On Sunday at 10 am, January 23, a three or four mile ski hike for the advanced skier will meet at Trailside Lodge. Skiers will be following a variety of sections of the 15-mile ski trail system that is bounded by Pine Pond, Castile Entrance, Cabin Area B and Inspiration Point with views of the Great Bend Gorge and Portage Canyon. If adequate ski conditions do not exist, a two-mile nature hike will replace the ski hike.

Scenic Snowshoe Loop Hike at the Peter’s Kill Area of Minnewaska

Join Nick Martin, Park Educator, for a snowshoe hike in the woods of the Peter's Kill Area of Minnewaska. During this approximately two-mile recreational program, we will snowshoe the various footpaths in the Peter's Kill Area to make one big loop. Departing from the parking area, this outing will take participants on the Red Loop, Bullwheel, High Peter's Kill and Yellow Connector Footpaths, returning on the Red Loop Footpath. While the distance of this outing is relatively short, there a few sustained uphills, downhills, and rocky terrain that some may find challenging. A limited number of snowshoes are available for participants to borrow for this program from the Education Department. Please plan to arrive by 9:30 a.m. if you will be borrowing snowshoes. If there is insufficient snow cover, this program will be offered as a hike and participants are highly encouraged to bring along microspikes. All visitors, regardless of vaccination status, must wear a mask when inside buildings. All unvaccinated participants are encouraged to wear face coverings and keep a minimum six-foot distance away from others who are not part of their immediate household when outside. The best prescription to cure cabin fever is to get outside and enjoy the wonders of winter. Get a taste of the cure and come join Laura Conner, Environmental Educator, for an approximately two-and-a-half mile-long snowshoe walk along the charming Awosting Falls Carriage Road. Leaving from the Peter's Kill Area, our route will take us on a slight uphill grade past a towering rock formation and along the Peter's Kill stream, before reaching our destination, the iconic 65-foot tall Awosting Falls. This program is recommended for physically fit adults and children older than eight years old. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian over the age of 18. A limited number of snowshoes are available for participants to borrow for this program from the Education Department. Otherwise, snowshoes may be rented for this program from the Park Preserve for a fee. Please plan to arrive by 9:30 a.m. if you will be borrowing snowshoes. Candlelight Snowshoe Event

Bring your family and friends out to enjoy a self-guided groomed candlelit half-mile trail. Snowshoe rentals are available on a first come, first serve basis for $5 a pair. Afterwards, enjoy a warm fire, refreshments and kids crafts in the enclosed shelter. 

* We are also holding a food drive to help local food pantries!  Although not mandatory, we ask that anyone who wants to participate, bring a can(s) of food or non-perishable items to the event.  Thanks in advance for any support you can provide!
