Frederic Church's The Natural Bridge, Virginia: American History and Anxiety
Wednesday, April 28, 2021 12:00 PM - 01:00 PM
Olana State Historic Site
(518) 751-0344

In 1851 Frederic Church travelled through Virginia in the company of his patron Cyrus Field with the goal of reaching and painting that state's most famous landscape, the Natural Bridge. Formerly the property of Thomas Jefferson, the Natural Bridge was frequently rendered by the pencil and brush of nineteenth century artists, very few of whom could escape the outsized legacy of the former President in crafting a popular conception of the Natural Bridge. Join Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Curator Christopher Oliver as he considers Church's painting, The Natural Bridge, Virginia, in relation to the Natural Bridge's contemporary associations with American history, western expansion, and slavery. Dr. Oliver organized the current exhibit Virginia Arcadia: The Natural Bridge in American Art, now on view at VMFA which includes Church's preparatory sketches on loan from the New York State Parks Olana collection, Dr. Christopher C. Oliver, Assistant Curator of American Art, joined VMFA in 2013. His particular interests in American art encompass painting, sculpture, and prints of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This virtual webinar is offered to members of The Olana Partnership and will be made publicly available for viewing online afterwards.
