Staatsburgh State Historic Site and the surrounding Mills and Norrie State Parks possess a great variety of environments in proximity, an ideal environment for birding. Experienced birders will enjoy a walk through several interesting environments, inexperienced birders will find encouragement and a helping hand, and newbies will be able to discuss equipment, apps, and techniques. We will also be on the lookout for the many wildflowers that bloom in the park. Volunteer walk leader David Lund has been birding daily for the last 35 years. Cost: free, Reservations required:

From late 19th-century dressmakers to transitional creatives who helped navigate what an American designer could be, Black people have always been a driving force in American fashion. Elizabeth Way, Associate Curator of Costume at The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology, will explore how Black people have significantly shaped American fashion through their style, their labor, and as innovators. Their stories, however, are often left out of the narrative. Examining the lives and careers of just a few, starts to create a more holistic understanding of American fashion and its wider impacts on culture and society. Cost: free. Reservations required:

I Love My Park Day

During this statewide volunteer event for NYS parks and historic sites, Staatsburgh seeks up to 25 volunteers to assist the site with some land scaping and grounds tasks, to prepare the site for the full warm-weather season. We will be weeding and mulching around the mansion, and gathering branches and debris in areas of the park. Volunteers receive event T shirts (while supplies last); a pizza lunch and complimentary mansion tour is offered by the Friends of Mills at Staatsburgh. Child and Family Craft Program: Koinobori/Japanese Carp Windsocks

A Japanese tradition, the flying of carp or koi shaped kites are used to honor children on Children's Day in early May. Families fly kites as a symbol of their wishes for their children. A group of carp kites can be arranged in a certain way to symbolize the family. For this program, each member of the family is encouraged to decorate their own carp windsock. All materials and instruction will be provided. This program will take place outdoors, weather permitting, with alternate indoor space if needed. Recommended for ages 4 and up. Cost: $5 per kite. The tour—led by a costumed guide—will include visiting the partially restored servants' hall. The hall is a striking artifact of servant life and work, featuring the servants' dining room, the footmen's bedrooms, and the butler's office. Reservations required:
