Hike for Hemlocks at Thacher Visitor Center
Saturday, February 22, 2020 10:30 AM - 01:00 PM
Thacher State Park

New York's eastern hemlocks provide food and shelter for wildlife, help cool streams, and provide erosion control. Sadly, our beloved hemlocks are under attack by the hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA). HWA is an invasive, aphid-like insect that attacks our hemlocks and can kill trees within 4 to 10 years. We need your help tracking eastern hemlocks and HWA across NYS. Learn how to identify eastern hemlocks and how to look for signs of HWA infestation, and learn how to report HWA into iMapInvasives, NY's invasive species database. After a lunch break, we'll go outside and inspect nearby hemlocks. Bring a lunch and dress warmly. Note: Please download the iMapInvasives app prior to the workshop. The app is available for download from Google Play or iOS App Store (search for "imapinvasives") for free. Call 518-872-0800 for more information.
