Explore Sterling Forest with a hike on the Bare Rock trail to Bare Rock Vista. Join the Rangers for this moderate hike lasting about 3 hours. The hike will go through beautiful hardwood forest and provide stunning views of Greenwood Lake. Make sure to bring water, snacks, and wear sturdy shoes.

Ever wonder what types of creatures call your local pond home? Or what kinds of creepy crawlies live in the muck at the bottom of a lake? Join us at Sterling Forest for a pond study to learn more about these animals and wonder no more. The day will begin with a short hike from the Visitor Center to Laurel Meadows pond where we will net plants and mud to see what types of animals we can discover. Be prepared to get wet and muddy so wearing appropriate clothing is recommended. Ticks are abundant so remember to bring your bug spray. All are welcome, but the program is geared towards children ages 6-13. Parental supervision is required.

Agony Grind Hike

Are you brave enough to conquer Agony Grind? Join the Rangers on this moderate hike along the Sapphire Trail to the overlook on top of Agony Grind, the steepest section of the Appalachian Trail in the state of New York. Once at the overlook you will have the option of descending/ascending Agony Grind or relaxing and taking in the view of the surrounding Hudson Highlands while waiting for the rest of the group. This is a moderate 5.5-mile hike, with Agony Grind adding an additional 0.7 miles. We will meet at the Visitor Center, then drive to the Sapphire trailhead to begin the hike. Please wear appropriate attire (hiking boots, backpack) and don't forget to bring plenty of water and a snack/lunch!

We will be using live animals for this program so you will get the chance to see these beautiful animals in person. Enjoy the morning at Sterling Forest with our free fishing clinic! Our in-house Licensed DEC Fishing Guide, Alison Manges, will teach the fundamentals of fishing as well as how to utilize both equipment and tackle. The day will begin at the Visitor Center with instruction and will follow with a short walk to the fishing location. Equipment is limited and will be available on a first come first serve basis, so please BRING YOUR OWN POLES AND TACKLE IF POSSIBLE. All are welcome and fishing licenses are not required for either children or adults for this event. Get ready to have some fun in the sun and hook yourself a record breaker. Parental supervision is required.

Indian Hill Hike

Take a break from the ordinary and accompany the Rangers on the Indian Hill loop hike. This moderate four-mile hike is perfect for both beginner and intermediate hikers looking for a more challenging hike. Indian Hill is not as well-known as our more popular trails, and the area provides fantastic views of the park in a more serene setting. It also boasts some of the largest and oldest oak trees which can be found in the park! We will meet at the Sterling Forest Visitor Center and carpool to the site as a group. Wear comfortable shoes and be sure to bring water and snacks.

Learn about the life cycle of the butterfly and how they help create some of your favorite fruits like apples and grapes. Help the Rangers start a butterfly garden here at Sterling Forest. Upon completion, you will receive a seed pack to start your very own butterfly garden at home, which will put a smile on the face of every butterfly that visits. Enjoy this 4-mile trail around Sterling Lake, located right behind the Visitor Center. It is an easy/moderate hike and should take between 2-3 hours to complete. Along the way hikers will enjoy historic remaining structures of the iron industry, some predating the revolutionary war. Wear sturdy shoes and dress appropriately for weather conditions; bring water and a snack.

Would you be able to survive a night in the woods with no fire or shelter? Join the Rangers and learn some basic survival skills that will help you in making it through the night. Learn how to construct debris shelters and even how to start a fire using nothing but sticks and bark! Then see a recreation of a Native American hunting camp used over a thousand years ago. You will never have to worry about being wet or cold in the woods again. This program is open to all, adults and children, and all materials will be provided. Parental supervision is required.

Experience and see Sterling Forest in a whole new light and join the Rangers for a NIGHT hike to the Fire Tower. Hike in the light of a full moon, stargaze, and view the illuminated skyline of Manhattan. The hike will depart at 5:30 PM sharp and will arrive at the Fire Tower in time to view the sunset. We will be walking back in the dark, so headlamps or flashlights are a MUST and will not be provided. All are welcome, and be sure to bring water, snacks, and wear sturdy shoes.

Mombasha High Point Hike

This hike meanders through beautiful Eastern hardwood forest and reaches the 1261-foot summit of Mombasha High Point. At the summit you will enjoy 360-degree views of the surrounding Hudson highlands area, including views of downtown Manhattan. This is a moderate 5-mile hike suitable for people with any level of hiking experience. We will meet at the Visitor Center, then drive to the Doris Duke trailhead to begin the hike.
