Be a Citizen Scientist at Sam’s Point

Minnewaska State Park Preserve: Sam's Point Area

When do the flowers bloom? When do the leaves fall? We are very curious to find out! Be a scientist for the day and help Sam's Point staff monitor seasonal changes in our plant communities. During this family program, we'll observe and identify blooming, fruiting, and budding native plants along a three-mile loop hike around Lake Maratanza. This program is recommended for adults and children over the age of eight, accompanied by a parent or guardian over the age of 18. Participants should come prepared with water, snacks, sunscreen, and appropriate footwear. All unvaccinated participants are encouraged to wear face coverings and keep a minimum six-foot distance away from others who are not part of their immediate household. All visitors, regardless of vaccination status, are encouraged to wear a mask when inside buildings. Meet at the Sam's Point Visitor Center. Pre-registration is required by calling Sam's Point at 845-647-7989.

Autumn Bird Walk - some southbound birds are still migrating through Long Island while winter birds in as well as the typical year-round birds. Sparrows, hawks, and waterfowl should be found about the waters and forest trails of the Preserve! Bring binoculars for a 2.5-mile walk through trails of the Preserve.

Fall Foliage: Identifying Native Trees in the Preserve

Join naturalist, John McShane, for a tree identification walk around Swan Lake. Discuss some key skills on how to identify the native trees that occupy the Preserve and learn how and why the leaves change color in the fall. John taught a "Tree Identification" course at The New York Botanical Garden for many years and worked as a naturalist for several nature preserves in Westchester. Suggested for ages 10+. Beach Walk and Clean Up

In honor of International Coastal Cleanup Day, join the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society and the Group for the East End for a walk and clean-up along the Preserve's beach on Long Island Sound.  Along the way, we will look for signs of local wildlife and pick up debris before it can harm marine life.  Beach clean-up supplies will be provided, but it is recommended to bring your own gloves.

Join Nick Martin, Park Educator, for a tree identification walk in the scenery of the Shawangunk Mountains. For this program, we will walk up to two-miles around the beautiful Lake Minnewaska on the Lake Minnewaska Carriage Road. Along the way, we will look at the various clues that trees give us to identify them, including leaves, branching, buds, and bark. Participants may want to bring binoculars, a tree identification guide, or a small notebook and pencil. This route will take us to and near many beautiful scenic overlooks of Lake Minnewaska, the surrounding Park Preserve, and the Wallkill Valley. Rain date: November 12. Lake Awosting and the Heights Loop Hike at Minnewaska

Join Nick Martin, Park Educator, for an approximately seven-and-a-half-mile outing to Lake Awosting and back on a variety of historic carriage roads and interesting footpaths. Starting from the Lower Parking Area, we'll walk on Mossy Glen Footpath, Blueberry Run Footpath, and Lower Awosting Carriage Road to reach Lake Awosting. From there we'll follow the Lake Awosting Carriage Road. We'll walk a small section of Wolf Jaw Connector Footpath and Scenic Trail and then head to the trailhead for Rainbow Falls Footpath. We will follow this scenic footpath to Upper Awosting Carriage Road. We'll hike to the east, towards Lake Minnewaska, and head north on Blueberry Run Footpath until the intersection with Lower Awosting Carriage Road. From here, we'll walk this easy-going stretch of trail back to our starting point. If the weather is clear, this hike should offer numerous, panoramic, scenic vistas of the surrounding Park Preserve and fall foliage. The footpath sections of this hike include rocky areas with uneven footing and wet areas, which may be difficult for some. All unvaccinated participants are encouraged to wear face coverings and keep a minimum six-foot distance away from others who are not part of their immediate household. All visitors, regardless of vaccination status, are encouraged to wear a mask when inside buildings. Meet at the Lower Parking Area. Winter Prep Pollinator Walk and Workshop with Fox Farm Apiary

Explore Olana's artist-designed landscape through the perspective of pollinators! Learn about how honeybees and humans can prepare for winter through a guided outdoor walk and workshop. During this program, beekeepers Chris and Lisa Layman will lead a guided outdoor walk and a short demo about making beeswax salves. Chris and Lisa run Fox Farm Apiary, a honeybee rescue and sanctuary in the Hudson Valley. In partnership with Olana, Fox Farm maintains an apiary onsite at Olana's farm complex. Join Naturalist and Wilderness Educator, Stephen Sciame of Blue Campfire Experiences LLC, for a ~2 mile walk around Swan Lake and surrounding areas and learn how to read the signs of nature to interpret animal movement and behavior. This includes not only their tracks, but also their droppings, feathers, nests and burrows, and things like rub marks on trees from deer antlers, holes in trees from woodpeckers, and even things you can't see- like their sounds! Learn how to use these observations to your advantage in a survival situation.

Join Laura Conner, Environmental Educator, for this modestly challenging, five-mile roundtrip hike along the Millbrook Mountain Footpath and Millbrook Mountain Carriage Road. Panoramic views of the Wallkill Valley are abundant from the top of Millbrook Mountain. The footpath section of this outing traverses through forests, over a stream and over rock slabs, with sustained downhill and uphill sections. Some participants may find this uneven terrain challenging. The return trip on the meandering Millbrook Mountain and Lake Minnewaska Carriage Roads is easier, with scenic views of the Palmaghatt Ravine below. Participants should bring water, snacks and lunch and wear appropriate hiking shoes. All unvaccinated participants are encouraged to wear face coverings and keep a minimum six-foot distance away from others who are not part of their immediate household. Join Nick Martin, Park Educator, for an approximately four-and-half-mile hike along Beacon Hill, around Lake Minnewaska, and through a section of the former Minnewaska resort golf course. Beginning at the Lake Minnewaska Visitor Center, we'll walk to the Beacon Hill Carriage Road until we reach the Beacon Hill Footpath. We'll follow this to reach Lake Minnewaska Carriage Road, which we'll walk until we reach Castle Point Carriage Road. From here, our journey takes us into the Meadows until we connect with the Upper Awosting Carriage Road. We will continue until we return to our starting point. If the weather is clear and foliage is still bright, this hike will offer many scenic vistas from which to take in the autumn sights, with views of Lake Minnewaska, the surrounding Park Preserve, Wallkill Valley, and the Catskill Mountains. The section of trail that wanders through the Meadows may be wet and muddy in a few areas. The Beacon Hill Footpath has a few uphill sections and rocky terrain that some may find challenging. All unvaccinated participants are encouraged to wear face coverings and keep a minimum six-foot distance away from others who are not part of their immediate household. Join Laura Conner, Environmental Educator, for this modestly challenging, five-mile roundtrip hike along the Millbrook Mountain Footpath and Millbrook Mountain Carriage Road. Panoramic views of the Wallkill Valley are abundant from the top of Millbrook Mountain. To reach this scenic, cliff-edge destination, we'll stroll the meandering Millbrook Mountain and Lake Minnewaska Carriage Roads, which offer scenic views of the Palmaghatt Ravine. The footpath section of this outing traverses through forests, over a stream and over rock slabs, with sustained downhill and uphill sections. Some participants may find this uneven terrain challenging. Participants should bring water, snacks and lunch and wear appropriate hiking shoes. Easy, small group, open-air 2 mile/2 hour (total) loop hike north along the Aqueduct and atop the beautiful Croton Dam. Meet near the restrooms at the rear (south end) of the parking lot at Croton Gorge Park, Rte. 129, Cortlandt, NY. 10567, GPS Coordinates: 41°13′34"N 73°51′21"W (may be parking fee). The leader of the hike will discuss the history and construction of the Old Croton Aqueduct and the features of the Croton Dam, the trailhead of the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail. The Aqueduct was completed in 1842 to supply fresh water to a thirsty New York City. (From Metro-North Hudson Line Croton-Harmon Train Station: 15-minute taxi.)

Come explore the picturesque High Peter's Kill Footpath with Laura Conner, Environmental Educator, on this approximately five-mile hike. We'll start by walking downhill on the High Peter's Kill Footpath, which features a variety of terrain along a cliff edge with numerous, scenic viewpoints. One of the best views is from a rocky knob along this route, reached by hiking up a steep hill. This nearly panoramic view showcases an expansive view from the Catskills to Millbrook Mountain. For our return trip, we'll walk along the easy-going Awosting Falls Carriage Road, past the beautiful and iconic Awosting Falls. This hike does include rocky, narrow and steep sections of trail that may be challenging for some. Participants should bring enough water and food for the outing and wear proper hiking shoes. All unvaccinated participants are encouraged to wear face coverings and keep a minimum six-foot distance away from others who are not part of their immediate household. Enjoy some refreshing autumn air as we embark on the red trail! This trail will take us all the way to the northeastern edge of the park, and offers beautiful woodland scenery! This is a moderate level hike with some hills. Bring water and good walking shoes/boots.

Moderately paced and approximately 2 miles in length, this hike is perfect for beginners and families with young children. Under the guidance of Dave Black, you'll learn about hiking etiquette including " leave no trace" ethics and what it means to be a nature preserve. Meet at the Visitor's Center courtyard. Leashed dogs are welcome. In the event of rain, the hike will be canceled; you will be notified via email at least 2 hours in advance.

While questions are most welcome there will be no formal discussion during this 6-mile, hilly, moderately paced walk, thus affording walkers the opportunity to relax, socialize, and enjoy the park's beauty. Bring lunch and drinking water. Some long grass.
