Junior Naturalists at Minnewaska: Kids Make Nature Journals and Nature Art

Wednesday, August 26, 2020 09:30 AM - 12:00 PM

Join park educators for a morning in nature, observing and making art. Minnewaska staff will provide disassembled nature journals to each child, individually packaged and not touched for the preceding 72 hours. Once assembled, children will be given time to draw, write and fill these journals on the trail. We'll hike down to the edges of Peter's Kill stream where each participant will have a chance to share their favorite nature art with the group. Examples of this can include a poem, visual art, music or more. Then, everyone will have time to build free-form, natural sculptures using sticks, rocks on the ground and fallen leaves. When we've all shared our art, we'll put the natural objects back where they came from, dismantling our work and returning the landscape to its natural state. Participants will need to bring their own crayons, pencils, tape or other tools to use with their nature journals. This program is recommended for children between the ages of six to ten years old, accompanied by a parent or guardian over the age of 18. Siblings of any age are welcome; however, younger siblings may need parental assistance. Due to COVID protocols, the total number of participants for this program is limited to eight individuals. All participants must wear face coverings or keep a minimum six foot distance away from others who are not part of your immediate household. Meet at the Peter's Kill Park Office. Registration required, call 845-255-0752.
