Peter’s Kill Area Hike at Minnewaska

Saturday, December 2, 2023 10:00 AM - 01:00 PM

An approximately two-mile hike in the Peter's Kill Area. We'll begin by hiking a short section of the Red Loop Footpath, to reach the Bullwheel Footpath, which we'll hike until it terminates at the intersection with the High Peter's Kill Footpath. From here, we'll hike east to a scenic, cliff-edge overlook, which offers scenic views eastward towards the Clove Valley. Next, we'll retrace our steps and then continue further west on the High Peter's Kill Footpath to reach another scenic overlook with a different view, this one looking northward towards the Rondout Valley. On a clear day, both overlooks offer beautiful views of the surrounding Park Preserve and beyond. After taking in the second view, we'll continue on the same route until we intersect the Yellow Connector Footpath, and we'll follow this trail until we connect with the Red Loop Footpath once more. Both these trails follow along the edge of the Peter's Kill stream, which cascades down rocky ledges nestled in a forest of evergreen rhododendrons, eastern hemlocks, and mountain laurels. Finally, we'll continue on the western side of the Red Loop Footpath to the parking area, finishing our loop. On this outing, we will be hiking exclusively on footpaths, which may have slippery rocks and roots as well as uneven footing. In the event of snow, this hike may offered as a snowshoe hike. Meet at the Peter's Kill Area. Pre-registration is required by calling the Lake Minnewaska Visitor Center at 845-255-0752.
