Beacon Hill and Awosting Falls Guided Walk at Minnewaska

Sunday, September 1, 2024

Join Josh Grosse, Student Conservation Association/AmeriCorps Environmental Educator, for a weekend walk around Beacon Hill, ending with a walk, out-and-back, to the iconic Awosting Falls. Starting at the Lake Minnewaska Visitor Center, we'll walk along the east side of the Lake up to the Beacon Hill field and picnic area, which features stunning views of the Wallkill Valley. From here we will wander through the woods on Beacon Hill Footpath, admiring century-old lichen and glacial evidence from over ten thousand years ago. We will pop out onto several cliffside vistas before reaching Beacon Hill Carriage Road. We will follow this gravel road until we reach the main vehicular road that connects the upper and lower areas of Minnewaska. We will follow the main road downhill until we meet Sunset Carriage Road, which serpentines down to Awosting Falls. We will take in the gorgeous views of the Falls before walking back up Sunset Carriage Road to reach the Lake Minnewaska Visitor Center. Please note that Beacon Hill Footpath does feature some areas with tricky footing that some may find difficult. Participants should come prepared with sturdy footwear and appropriate clothing. Meet at the Lake Minnewaska Visitor Center. Pre-registration is required by calling the Lake Minnewaska Visitor Center at 845-255-0752.
