Tuesday Trek: Hike the Hidden Meadows Loops at Minnewaska
Tuesday, January 21, 2025 10:00 AM - 01:00 PM
Come join Laura Conner, Environmental Educator, for an
approximately four-mile walk along carriage roads and old woods roads through a
former golf course and orchard. Abundant scenic views of the Catskills are
visible along this route. We'll begin our journey along the Lake Minnewaska
Carriage Road, which we'll follow to the entrance to the old golf course. This
area of forest was transformed decades ago, and it offers a unique opportunity
to observe nature's patient conversion of the land back towards a forest
through the process of ecological succession. We'll meander downhill, through a
small pitch pine grove and a wetland where signs of wildlife, including tracks
in snow, can be abundant. Next, we'll begin our first loop, heading uphill
through an insular meadow, fringed with a mixed forest, to reach an area with
multiple ponds. These ponds were used to hold water, pumped from Lake
Minnewaska, to water the greens of the golf course. Our final portion of loop
in the Meadows will take us past blueberry patches and downhill through an old
orchard until we emerge on Upper Awosting Carriage Road. From here, we'll
walk back to the Visitor Center. If conditions are icy, participants are
encouraged to bring microspikes or other ice traction devices. If ski trails
are being groomed, this outing location will change. Meet at the Lake Minnewaska
Visitor Center. Pre-registration is required by calling the Lake Minnewaska
Visitor Center at 845-255-0752.
