On the eastern tip of the South Shore of Long Island, Montauk Point State, offers stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean where it meets the Block Island Sound. The view is unique, because, when the water is calm, visitors can clearly see the "race" of converging tides from the Atlantic and Block Island Sound. Visitors can also use the nature trails to hike or cross-country ski, or spend time watching the seals sun on the rocks offshore. Block Island can be seen off in the distance.

Parking is available for walks along the rocky shoreline, viewing of the Ocean from the restaurant and gift shop, or a visit to the neighboring Montauk Lighthouse, the oldest lighthouse in New York State, commissioned by President George Washington in 1792. http://www.montaukhistoricalsociety.org/montauk-point-lighthouse/

Surf fishing at the Point is a popular activity, especially when striped bass are running in the area. Surfing is allowed from December 15th through March 31st. Other state parks nearby include: Camp Hero, Montauk Downs, Hither Hills, Shadmoor, and Napeague.

In addition to statewide hunting regulations, special restrictions are in effect in state parks to protect visitors to ensure sound wildlife management. Hunters are advised to check with the state park regional office and with the local DEC wildlife management office for specific information.

All hunters must have a valid New York State hunting license and, where applicable, a federal waterfowl permit. Waterfowl hunters should note that current state regulations prohibit the use of lead shot.

Montauk Point State Park is open for small game hunting from 12/1-2/29 and waterfowl 12/1- end of season. Hunting is not permitted on weekends or holidays. Deer season runs weekdays only: 11/1-12/31 (archery)* and 1/6-1/31 (firearm)**. Small game and waterfowl hunting is not permitted during January deer season.
