Fun Fridays: Explore the Peter’s Kill Area of Minnewaska

Join Park Educator, Nick Martin, on the second and fourth Fridays in February to explore the footpaths of the Peter's Kill Area of Minnewaska. Hikes may be up to a mile and a half long and will take place with or without snow. This is a great way to jump start your morning and if there is snow, this is an opportunity to learn how to snowshoe in a beautiful setting. Snowshoes may be reserved and rented from the Park Preserve Office, located at the Peter's Kill Area, for a discounted rate of $5 per person for this program. Daily snowshoe rental costs $15 per adult and $14 per junior. If there is insufficient snow cover, this program will be offered as a hike. Meet in the Peter's Kill Area.

Learn all about ice fishing at a free clinic co-hosted by NYS DEC, Albany County Conservation Alliance, and NYS Parks. DEC will supply some bait and tackle, but experienced anglers are encouraged to bring their own fishing gear. After a short lesson on the basics of ice fishing and filleting your catch, anglers will try their luck on the ice. Volunteers will be on hand throughout the day to assist participants on the ice. A warming area and refreshments will be available. Rain date is February 26. Call 872-0800 for more information.

This opportunity is being offered at 11:00 a.m. every Saturday in January, February and March, weather permitting. It is designed for people who are beginners, interested in trying snowshoeing as a new winter activity. Each session will be run by a Sam's Point employee who will provide instruction on how to properly wear and adjust the snowshoes, as well as work with you until you are ready to head out on your favorite trail with confidence. The lesson may last up to one hour. Snowshoes are available to rent for this program at a discounted rate of $5 per person at the Sam's Point Visitor Center.

Did you know the Shawangunk Ridge was once home to a thriving berry-picking industry? Discover this fascinating cultural history on a short guided snowshoe hike to the remains of cabins in a berry-picking encampment. Bring a lunch to enjoy while we warm up in the Visitor Center and watch a 27 minute documentary that presents stories from some Berry Pickers themselves. Snowshoes are available for rent at the Sam's Point Visitor Center at the rate of $5 per person for the program. Early arrival is requested for snowshoe rental. If there is insufficient snow cover, this program will be offered as a hike. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian over the age of 18. This program is being offered at the Sam's Point Area in Cragsmoor.

Tuesday Trek: High Peter’s Kill and Awosting Falls Loop Snowshoe

Come join Park Educator, Nick Martin, for an adventurous five mile snowshoe hike along the High Peter's Kill Footpath and the Awosting Falls Carriage Road. Starting from the Peter's Kill Area, participants will hike along the Red Loop and Bullwheel Footpaths to reach the High Peter's Kill Footpath. We will continue along the High Peter's Kill Footpath until its conclusion, stopping along the way to take in scenic vistas of the Catskill Mountains and the surrounding Park Preserve. The return trip will take participants on the easy-going Awosting Falls Carriage Road, past the 65 foot tall Awosting Falls. The first half of this route includes numerous hills, rocky sections and potential icy areas. Participants must wear appropriate winter footwear and bring plenty of food and water for the day. Snowshoes may be reserved and rented from the Park Preserve Office, located at the Peter's Kill Area, for a discounted rate of $5 per person for this program. Daily snowshoe rental costs $15 per adult and $14 per junior. Early arrival is suggested for snowshoe rental. If there is insufficient snow cover, this program will be offered as a hike. Super Special Storytime: Making Maple Syrup at the Gardiner Library

Join Children's Librarian, Amy Laber, and a guest park educator from Minnewaska State Park Preserve for a special story time all about maple syrup! Children will hear stories about maple sugaring and they'll learn what a maple tree looks like. They'll also be able to touch and see old-style maple sugaring tools, including a bucket, tap and hand drill. Then, with some help from their parents, each child will make their own maple tree craft that they can take home. This program will take place during the normal story time for four and five year olds, accompanied by a parent or guardian. We will learn about the complete process of maple sugaring from identifying the correct trees, to using traditional tools to tap a tree and collect sap, to processing the sap until it becomes the tasty treat that we desire most. This program is recommended for families with children age six to twelve. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian over the age of 18. Join Minnewaska State Park Preserve educators for a different recreational and educational program for homeschool families, usually on the first Thursday from March to June and September to December, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Come join other homeschoolers at Minnewaska for a sap-seeking journey! Mid-February and early March is traditionally when sap is collected for producing maple syrup. We will search for and tap sugar maple trees using traditional tools. This program is recommended for children between the ages of seven to ten years old, accompanied by a parent or guardian over the age of 18. As always, well-behaved younger siblings capable of participating are welcome to join us. This program will meet in the Awosting Parking Area.
