Field Guide Friday: Geology of the Ice Caves at Sam’s Point
Friday, June 27, 2025 10:00 AM - 02:00 PM
Minnewaska State Park Preserve: Sam's Point Area
Join
Becca Howe-Parisio, Environmental Educator, on a four-mile, moderate adventure,
to look at rock formations, discuss geologic features and talk about all
things sedimentary. We will not necessarily use a field guide for this program,
but we'll talk about different scientific papers that discuss the geology of
the Shawangunk Mountains. Field Guide Friday is a monthly program, focusing on
different topics as the seasons change. This program is suited for anyone who
is old enough to read and is interested in learning how to use a book to
identify plants, insects, and more. Participants must bring water and snacks and wear appropriate hiking shoes. Meet at the Sam's
Point Visitor Center. Pre-registration is required by signing up via
Eventbrite.

Minnewaska State Park Preserve: Sam's Point Area
Join Becca Howe-Parisio, Environmental Educator, for a walk
through the historic Ice Caves, where the air temperatures remain cool and
comfortable all summer and a large chunk of ice rests beneath the boardwalk
trail. If you've ever been curious about how this nationally recognized,
natural landmark formed, this program is for you! While on this three-mile
walk, Becca will offer a lesson on the unique geology of the entire Sam's Point
area, including other visible geologic features, such as glacial evidence and
extinct faults. This hike will take place on a series of carriage roads and
footpaths which include a somewhat steep hill and some rocky terrain. Good
mobility is required for this hike, as there are also two ladders to climb.
Meet at the Sam's Point Visitor Center. Pre-registration is required by
